Data intelligence for modern administrative action

SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)

How can a federal state be managed efficiently based on data? This question was at the heart of the project to introduce SAP BW/4HANA for public administrations at the Office of the Salzburg Provincial Government. Together with Axians, an originally planned system rebuild was turned into a customized migration project with a high degree of innovation and direct added value for the administration.

Initial situation: SAP BW 7.5 at the limit

The existing SAP Business Warehouse 7.5 (SQL-based) was no longer future-proof in terms of functionality and technology. A complete greenfield approach was initially discussed for the planned system change. However, after an intensive analysis phase, an alternative, more efficient approach emerged.

Solution: Customized brownfield approach instead of system disruption

In joint workshops with the client:

  • Pain points identified
  • Existing data models classified (worthy of preservation vs. obsolete)
  • A custom-fit target architecture designed

This led to the development of an innovative brownfield approach:

  • System conversion for data and queries worth preserving
  • New construction only where functionally necessary
  • Conversion of the planning architecture for sustainable processes

Project implementation in seven focused steps:

  1. As-is analysis & target architecture
Evaluation of the existing BW system and derivation of a viable future strategy
  2. Workshops & project planning
Joint development of the technical & organizational roadmap
  3. System conversion of the core models
Migration of relevant data and reports to SAP BW/4HANA
  4. Data modeling & reduction
Elimination of obsolete structures – tidying up included
  5. Redesign of the planning components
Introduction of modern planning tools and more flexible processes
  6. BO-Server & Frontend
Structure incl. authorizations, Lumira Designer & Analysis for Office
  7. Acceptance & go-live
On-schedule rollout through close cooperation at eye level

“The implementation of SAP BW/4HANA was characterized by a high level of expertise, flexibility and a cooperative partnership. The requirements were implemented not only technically, but also organizationally in an excellent way.
